Our mission is to cultivate unique voices in literature, to develop books that challenge readers to grow their capacity for empathy, and to nurture and support the writer through the creative process.
Carmel Mawle, Managing Editor
For eleven years, Carmel Mawle served as Editor-in-Chief of DoveTales, An International Journal of the Arts, editing, mentoring, and publishing writers of all ages, from every continent on the globe. Since retiring in 2022, she has continued to guide writers to develop, polish, and publish their writing.
Carmel leads a weekly writers group, encouraging writers to share their work through readings and community events. She built an online journal for the group to share their work with friends and family. You can view their website here.
Through in-person or Zoom coaching, we will explore your goals, strategize ways to further develop your literary craft, and come up with a plan for action.
Described as “big picture editing,” developmental editing includes copy, line, and stylistic editing. We’ll explore the overall premise of the story, character development, and the use of dialogue and description. We’ll consider perspective and narrative voice, as well as pacing and flow. Developmental editing will tighten up sentence structure so the language is sharp and clear. It will explore the ways word choice and syntax contribute to the tone or emotion of the piece. You will receive specific suggestions about how to best utilize craft to reach the objective of your work.
Following a thorough evaluation, you will receive notes directly on your document, as well as a typed critique.
Preparing Your Manuscript
If you’re further along in your writing projects, manuscript editing, book design and page layout will help prepare your manuscript for publication.
For consultation, editing, manuscript preparation and design, as well as website development, the hourly rate is $75. Should we agree to publish your book, the rate will be negotiable.
We believe in the power of writing to transform lives. Many of the writers Carmel has worked with or advocated for have gone on to win recognition for their writing, been admitted to prestigious schools, and/or gained tenure, and many of them could not have afforded private tutoring when they began their journey. To that end, we place 10% of all editing and consulting fees in a scholarship fund to make our services affordable to marginalized writers. Contact us if a full or partial scholarship might help you get started on your writing adventure.
